As a class, we love doing drama and we’ve been working on a great project for the last couple of weeks. We’ve been working in groups to create a short drama based around a setting given to us and using only two props from the classroom. It has been brilliant for our imagination and for getting us to work together as a team.
Yesterday, along without hundreds of other schools across the country, we raised our tricolour outside the school as part of the 1916 commemorations. We have been learning all about the Easter Rising and how important it is in our country’s history.
Every Monday morning the whole school stops for Buddy Reading. This is when children from younger classes are paired up with the children in older classes and they read to each other. This allows everyone to read aloud to their and also to enjoy being read to. It’s been very successful and very popular!
To celebrate today being world book day, children had the chance to dress up as their favourite character from a book. They were also invited to bring in their favourite book for a special DEAR time. Each child had the opportunity to talk about their book or character in front of the class. It is a great way to encourage children to discuss the stories and characters in a range of books.
In our science lessons we have been leaning about sound. We went on a sound hunt to explore and identify sounds in the environment. Then we thought about musical instruments that we could make ourselves. We designed our instruments and then made them in class using everyday items. We had great fun playing them together in our class orchestra!
On Wednesday we celebrated Grandparents’ Day. Lots of grandparents came in to share stories of their school days with the children. They told us all about the games they played when they were young and all the boys and girls in first and second class had lots of questions to ask them. We also created profiles of our grandparents and presented the finished pieces to any grandparents that came in to visit. We finished off by performing a poem and a song for the visitors. The grandparents then enjoyed some tea and cakes in the hall, which was organised by fifth and sixth class.
