This week was Maths Week. The children had the chance to experience maths in a fun and engaging way by playing many different maths games.

First they were given shapes that they arranged into different patterns.

While learning about how plants grow and what they need to survive we decided to do a spot of gardening ourselves. The children filled socks with grass seeds and compost and watered them regularly. They drew some faces on the cups and waited for their “hair” to grow.

We also looked to see what would happen if we didn’t give grass any sunlight.

We also saw what would happen if you don’t water your plants!

I think this guy needs a haircut!

Visitors to our school this week  cannot miss the new  brightly coloured fence  at the front of the school on the infant play yard.  This special fence is inscribed with the name of every pupil enrolled in the school  on the 60th anniversary of St. Finians.  Many thanks to Ms. Minogue  who did such a wondeful job  of the name writing on each fence post. Also thanks to pupils and parents who helped with painting ….  A special thanks must go to Willie Shevlin who finished painting all the fence panel and supports.  Thank you also to Andrew Doyle, Phillips Construction for all  his hard work over the past year!

Today Fr. Quinn  joined us for our end of year school mass.  Readings  and prayers  were prepared  by the boys and girls of 6th class  as part of their graduation mass. Their parents received a special invitation to join them on this special graduation day. The school choir were in fine voice and were a credit to Ms. Lambe and Ms. Corrigan.

After the mass it was time for the awards. The first award was a lovely surprise ! St. Finians has been working hard for our active schools flag and Mr. Mc Eneany was delighted to announce that we had won the flag  which Mr. Shevlin proudly displayed  for us…..

Then it was time to make a presentation to our super school secretary Olga. All the pupils made a special piece of artwork for Olga.  It has the thumbprint of every pupil in the school. Olga has been with us at St. Finians for  many years and leaves us to take up a full time position at Tullydonnell School in September.  We wish Olga all the very best in her new job but we will miss her very much.  Good luck Olga !

Everyone was in great form  as the awards were made  for the Pearce  Callaghan  Project  Competition. Our thanks to the Callaghan family who present the award every year. This is one of the special highlights of the day for 6th class.  As usual entries were of a very high standard . Every pupil received a certificate for participation . Tension mounted as only two pupils remained to get  certificates  … who would be the winner?…….

We wish Mr. Shevlin all the best as he sets off  on his travels next school year.
