Junior and Senior Infants have been learning about The Garden Centre this month for Spring. They played in the role play area practicing watering the flowers, filling pots with soil, planting flowers and selling garden equipment. They especially enjoyed the messy play with soil and water. We learned about the lifecycle of a plant and all the things a plant needs to grow. We enjoyed designing our own leprechauns and rainbows for St. Patrick's Day.
The boys and girls have been very busy learning about procedural writing. We had great fun making our own Rice Krispie buns and jam sandwiches. We wrote some instructions on how we made them. They were delicious!
Before our midterm break the children from Ms. Lambe’s and Ms. Corrigan’s classes went for a nature walk around the grounds of Barmeath Castle. Mrs. Bellew came with us and challenged us to a ‘Tree Hunt’. We gathered lots of leaves which we brought back to school for our leaf themed art. It was a great day.
On Thursday the boys and girls from 5th and 6th took the infant room students out into the garden for some reading in the good weather. A most enjoyable time was had by all, a good idea for those summer months at home in the garden!
This week we received some information about a new mental health awareness and educational campaign. It’s called ‘Walk in My Shoes’ and is run by St. Patrick’s Mental Health Services Dublin.
We are a very healthy bunch in St. Finian’s N.S. We eat lots of fruit and veg, drink lots of water and do lots of exercise. We take great care of our bodies.
But it is also very important to look after our minds and our feelings. Some days we feel really good and really happy. Other days we might feel a bit sad or lonely. It is okay to have those feelings. It is important to understand that feeling sad sometimes is a normal part of life.
Sometimes we fall and break a bone. When that happens, we go to the hospital so that the doctors and nurses can help make us better. Our minds can get hurt too and when that happens, we can do things to help make it better, just like fixing any other part of our bodies.
If you are feeling sad or worried about something, sometimes talking to someone about it can help. You could talk to your mum or dad or a teacher. We will always try to help you.

We were getting to know each other by playing together. We were learning how to co-operate, share, take turns and be a good friend. We also had great fun!
