Liam from sixth class represented the school last weekend in Croke Park.  Liam won the INTO GAA Skills competition for Co. Louth and was chosen to represent Co. Louth during the interval of the All-Ireland Footbal semi finals.  Liam scored 3 goals and 3 points! Well done Liam!

A week later than planned, we finally got to Salterstown beach to do our big spring clean! We had to postpone because of the bad weather but we got a lovely warm day, even it it was a little breezy! We set off to gather litter in two groups with all our clean-up equipment which was provided by An Taisce and the council. We were amazed by the amount of rubbish on our beautiful beach and wondered how anybody could spoil our landscape like that. After all that hard work we had a well deserved lunch break by the pier. We even had some time to play around and all the beach has to offer.

This week we received some information about a new mental health awareness and educational campaign. It’s called ‘Walk in My Shoes’ and is run by St. Patrick’s Mental Health Services Dublin.

We are a very healthy bunch in St. Finian’s N.S. We eat lots of fruit and veg, drink lots of water and do lots of exercise. We take great care of our bodies.

But it is also very important to look after our minds and our feelings. Some days we feel really good and really happy. Other days we might feel a bit sad or lonely. It is okay to have those feelings. It is important to understand that feeling sad sometimes is a normal part of life.

Sometimes we fall and break a bone. When that happens, we go to the hospital so that the doctors and nurses can help make us better. Our minds can get hurt too and when that happens, we can do things to help make it better, just like fixing any other part of our bodies.

If you are feeling sad or worried about something, sometimes talking to someone about it can help. You could talk to your mum or dad or a teacher. We will always try to help you.

To take part in this campaign, we were asked to take a ‘school selfie’ on Friday 8th April, upload it onto our website and display the link to the Walk in My Shoes campaign. Here are our selfies:

Every Monday morning the whole school stops for  Buddy Reading. This is when children from younger classes are paired up with the children in older classes and they read to each other. This allows everyone to read aloud to their and also to enjoy being read to. It’s been very successful and very popular!

We had a wonderful day at our Graduation mass.  We are so proud of our Sixth Class Pupils, they are a credit to our school and to their families.  At our Graduation Mass each year we present a slide show of our Sixth Class children and their lives in our school.  We hope that you enjoy the slideshow for the Graduating Class of 2015!

This week is national “bike week”. To celebrate this, members from the Cú Chulainn Cycling Club visited our school to take a number of pupils( 3rd-6th) for a session on using a bike in a safe and sensible way. The instructors from the club were fantastic and the pupils really enjoyed it. They learned all about bike care, rules of the road, traffic signals and safety measures.

LMFM also gave us a surprise visit and ran a piece for the radio, interviewing some of the pupils, instructors and teachers.

The instructors were very pleased to see so many pupils cycling to school. It is a great feature of our Active School’s programme. Also this Friday, as part of National Bike Week, the pupils of 5th and 6th class will cycle to St. Colmcille’s Tullydonnell, for a Basketball tournament.
