Christmas Jumping Jacks Challenge!

Senior Infants

March 18, 2015 by Brenda Lambe

We had a great time exploring the story of ‘The Three Little Pigs’ through play!

We designed buildings in the architect’s office and made lists of the materials we would need. We built buildings out of boxes on the construction site. We played with the pig and wolf puppets in the small world area. We made pig masks and acted out the story in the drama corner. And we made ‘Wanted’ posters for the big bad wolf in the Garda Station. Check out our photos!

We planted some mange tout in pots. We put them on the windowsill. We will check them every day to make sure they have enough water, light and heat.

Today is Pancake Tuesday and to celebrate, we learned how to make pancakes at school! We learned that Pancake Tuesday occurs on the day before Ash Wednesday. People long ago would use up all their eggs, milk and sugar before Lent and making pancakes was a simple way to do this.

We got all our utensils and ingredients ready. Clodagh could even name the spatula! We weighed the flour and sieved it into the bowl with a pinch of salt. Then, we added the eggs and gradually added the milk as we whisked the mixture. We mixed it really well with a whisk. We added a little bit of melted butter and finally our pancake mixture was ready. Adam even remembered that the pancake mixture is called batter!

We cooked some pancakes, making sure they were golden brown on both sides. Ms Lambe flipped the pancake and caught it in the pan! We got to choose our topping – most people wanted Nutella! Only one person wanted lemon and sugar!

Now we know how to make pancakes. We can also sequence the steps for Maths and History.

St. Valentine’s Day is on the 14th of February every year. It is a special day when we tell special people in our lives how much we love them. We enjoyed making Valentine cards for our Mums and Dads!

We had a fantastic day today when some grandparents’ came to visit. They came to our classrooms and answered our questions. We found out lots of information. The grandparents were invited to visit one classroom and we all had different topics to discuss. Junior and Senior Infants wanted to learn about the first day at school. First and Second Class wanted to learn about games that the grandparents played at school. Third and Fourth Class wanted to hear about equipment that grandparents used in school and Fifth and Sixth Class wanted to learn about school tours and extracurricular activities.

After the class visits the Sixth class pupils served tea and refreshments in the hall and the grandparents all had a little chat. Sixth class pupils made buns, cakes and apple tarts with some of the parents and grandparents yesterday! We would especially like to thank Ann Dunne for organising the ICA ladies to come in and work with the children. Our thanks also to Lorraine Boyle and Roisin Holmes for helping the children with the baking. Finally we would like to thank Barbara Keane and Catherine Woods for their help in serving the refreshments.

Some more grandparents will be in school on Thursday to help Third and Fourth class to make St. Brigid’s Crosses. We make one for every family in the school. Fr Daly will bless the crosses at our Friday Assembly.

Thank you to all the ICA ladies, parents and grandparents who made this a wonderful week.

Well done to all the classes who took part in our Active School Challenge! The challenge was to see how many jumping jacks each class could do in the 4 weeks leading up to Christmas.

Each class was given a target number of Jumping Jacks to achieve and all the classes reached and surpassed their target.

The class with the most jumping Jacks was 3rd and 4th who managed 59,920 jumping Jacks.  Great job everybody!
