Fifth and Sixth class were learning about staple foods all around the globe in Science and Geography. We looked at the different factors that determine a country’s or region’s staple such as climate, cost, supply etc. Some of the staples we looked at were potatoes, rice, pasta, plantain, couscous, etc. We then learned that most staples have a high starch percentage. We talked about how starch gives us energy and how some foods give us more than others.
The pupils went home and collected various types of food which we then tested for starch using iodine. It was great fun and the pupils had good fun checking to see if their predictions were correct.

The St. Finian’s quiz team claimed the Louth Cumann an mBunscol Tráth na gCéist title today. It is the first time the school has claimed the title and we are extremely proud! Having won their regional competition last week, the team went into today’s final in Knockbridge quietly confident and this confidence surely shone through with the team scoring a very impressive 71 out of 80 in what was a challenging quiz. A huge well done to Áine, Alex, Catherine, Cillian & Seán. A tremendous achievement that you should be very proud of. A big thank you to all the parents who helped with transport both weeks!
Well done boys and girls!!

Fifth and Sixth Class really enjoyed a day out at DKIT college as part of Science Week. We went to a show called “Your Big Beautiful Biased Brain”. The pupils learned all about how important our brain is and how it works. There was also plenty of fun tests videos and activities on the day to show how the brain operates in different unique and unusual ways.
