Sixth Class pupils were very lucky to get the chance to learn some baking skills. They made all sorts of lovely treats for Grandparents Day. A big thanks to Ann who came in to teach her mastery baking skills to the pupils.

Last week four of our amazing pupils in 6th class took part in a cross country race for primary pupils all across Co. Louth! The race was 1.5 km in distance and we had two boys and two girls participating.

Cillian Burke and George Bellew competed with over 120 boys from various schools and both boys finished respectively in the middle of the field.

Hannah Hanratty and Áine Murray competed in the girls race with 114 competitors from all around the Wee County. The girls competed magnificently on the day with both finishing in the top 10. Hannah finished in 9th with Áine finishing in an amazing 5th place. It was a remarkable effort from the girls.

We are extremely proud of all four of our pupils who competed in Termonfeckin last week!

Fifth and Sixth class were learning about staple foods all around the globe in Science and Geography. We looked at the different factors that determine a country’s or region’s staple such as climate, cost, supply etc. Some of the staples we looked at were potatoes, rice, pasta, plantain, couscous, etc. We then learned that most staples have a high starch percentage. We talked about how starch gives us energy and how some foods give us more than others.

The pupils went home and collected various types of food which we then tested for starch using iodine. It was great fun and the pupils had good fun checking to see if their predictions were correct.
