Castle Wars!

February 25, 2016 by Coppertops Administrator Leave a Comment

Last week we went all Medieval and built ourselves some castles! The children went home and took on the task of designing and building their own castle to rule over. It’s design was based of the stone castles the Normans built around Ireland.

The children did a fantastic job and really put a huge effort in, here are some of the Kings and Queens and their castles.

We also made some catapults so that we could lay siege to each other in our castle battles. In these games the children had to knock over little army men in their opponents castle. Here’s some of the catapults we made.

All you need is 6 lollipop sticks and 3 rubber bands.

Next just follow these steps and you can make your own!

Now its ready to fire!

We had a visit from the parents to see all the work the children put in and how the castles wars were turning out. It was a very successful day altogether!

Our Coat-of-Arms

February 8, 2016 by Coppertops Administrator Leave a Comment

A few weeks ago we had Bru Bellew visit us in class and show off some of the Bellew Family history. Most impressive of all were the flags that he brought in.

These are the flags from the Bellew family showing their Coat-of-Arms. We also got to try out some old uniforms from the English army!

We enjoyed the Flags and Coat-of-Arms so much we decided to make our own.

First we cut out our shield shapes out of card.

Next we papier mached the shields to create a nice surface to paint on. We mixed PVA glue and water to make a runny paste and used this to stick old scraps of paper all over the shields.

After that we had to paint a white undercoat so that none of the writing on the paper could be seen.

Next we painted on our base coat of paint. These would be the main colours of our Coat-of-Arms. We picked these colours based on their heraldic meaning and what we wanted our Coat-of-Arms to represent.

IMG_5817 IMG_5821 IMG_5843 IMG_5818

Finally we painted on our Heraldic symbols, these were chosen because they have a special meaning to us.

At last after all our hard work they were finally finished and ready to show off!

Learning about sound!

February 5, 2016 by Isabel Corrigan Leave a Comment

In our science lessons we have been leaning about sound. We went on a sound hunt to explore and identify sounds in the environment. Then we thought about musical instruments that we could make ourselves. We designed our instruments and then made them in class using everyday items. We had great fun playing them together in our class orchestra!  IMG_3641
